If you ever read "The Lord of the Rings"

Remember Isengard? Fortress of Saruman, surrounded by trees and a scene of total devestation once those trees were cut and burned.

My wife and I bought some mountain land in Swannanoa. The plan is to make a sort of family compound by giving part of it to each of my sons and their wife and wife to be. This land needs help. It has been logged and left for dead. My very own Isengard.

The logging company ran out of money in the process of taking the trees. Consequently they took short cuts, pushing the slash into huge piles, backing out on their obligations to reseed and stabilize the land, and generally leaving the ground piled with unwanted logs and limbs. I have seen pictures of the forrests near Mt. St. Helen after it exploded and am reminded of this piece of ground.

But, on a more positive note, the views from the land are incredable. Now that spring has more or less arrived, wild flowers are beginning to peek out of the ground, probably wondering what the heck happened while they were dormant, and the remaining trees, though scraggly, are beginning to leaf out. The potential is clear.

This blog will document our efforts to make this place aesthetically presentable, reintroduce some biodiversity to the flora, (making sure to keep every plant native) and carve out some minimally intrusive living sites.

There is a five year plan. In five years I want this place to look better than it did, or at least be well on its way. Pictures will follow
